The Stranger
Throughout the novel The Stranger, Albert Camus uses foils to show that Meursault has changed from when he was with Maman after she died and when he was with the priest in the jail cell.
In the passage when Meursault tells the caretaker that he doesn't want to see Maman after she died, Albert Camus shows that Meursault did not have a good relationship with Maman because of how he did not want to look at her body when she died. For humans, this symbolizes that not all people have close relationships with family members. Also Meursault may have feared the death of his mother and was embarrassed and had feelings of guilt because he did not visit her while she was in the home.
When the passage begins, Meursault starts by saying "Maman died today"(p.3). Meursault says he will take the two o'clock bus and get to the old people's home in the afternoon. He slept the whole bus ride which shows that his thoughts were not on Maman's death.
Meursault wanted to see Maman right away but the caretaker told him that he had to see the director first. The director told him, "Madame Meursault came to us three years ago. You were her sole support. You don't have to justify yourself, my dear boy. I've read your mother's file. You weren't able to provide her properly. She needed someone to look after her. You earn only a modes salary. And the truth of the matter is, she was happier here"(p.4). "You're young, and it must have been hard for her with you"(p.5).
When Maman was at home with Meursault, she used to spend her time following him with her eyes, not saying a thing, which further suggests a distant relationship. She cried a lot the first few days because she wasn't used to the home. "A few months later and she would have cried if she'd been taken out. She was used to it"(p.5). That year of Maman being in the home, Meursault did not go there to visit much. He also said it took up his Sunday, ad it was too much trouble to buy a bus ticket and spend two hours traveling to visit her. This shows Meursault had no thoughts or feelings toward Maman.
The director spoke to Meursalt again. "I suppose you'd like to see your mother. I'll leave you now, Monsieur Meursault. If you need me for anything, I'll be in my office"(p.5). Meursault thanked him. Meursault went in the room and soon after, the caretaker came in. "We put the cover on, but I'm supposed to unscrew the casket so you can see her. You don't want to?" "No." "Why not?" "I don't know." "I understand"(p.6).
Life is too short because just like Maman, we will eventually die someday and will regret our actions of not having the chance to be close to a loved one that we may lose at any given time.
Still, throughout The Stranger, Albert Camus uses the priest as a foil to show that Meursault has changed from when he was with Maman after she died. He goes from emotionless from after Maman died and he gets emotional when the priest shows up in his jail cell.
In the passage when Meursault yells at the priest when he comes to talk to him, Albert Camus shows that Meursault did not have a good relationship with him because of how he treated him. For humans, this symbolized that not all people have close relationships and get along with each other.
When the passage begins, Meursault starts by yelling at the top of his lungs at the priest. Meursault says, "I insulted him and told him not to waste his prayers on me"(p.120). Meursault then grabbed him by the collar of his cassock and was pouting out on him everything that was in his heart, cries of anger and joy. Meursault feels guilty and tells the priest to not wast his time on him. "I had lived my life one way and I could just as well have lived it another" (p.121). Feelings of death was all Meursault had.
Meursault still has feelings of guilt because he didn't cry at Maman's funeral. Meursault felt that because he didn't cry, it didn't matter. It didn't matter that he was accused of murder and being executed.
Meursault was gasping for air because of all the shouting he did. "But they were already tearing the chaplain form my grip and the guards were threatening me" (p.122). The chaplain calmed them and looked at Meursault for a moment without saying a word. The chaplain's eyes were full of tears and then he turned away and disappeared.
The chaplain then left and Meursault was able to calm down. Then he started to think about Maman again. "I was exhausted and threw myself on my bunk. I must have fallen asleep because I woke up with stars in my face. For the first time in a long time I thought about Maman. So close to death, Maman must have felt free then and ready to live it all again too" (p.123). This shows he is still thinking about Maman and having guilty feelings about Maman and their relationship.
Life is too short because just like Maman, we will eventually die someday and well regret our actions on not having the chance to be close to a loved one that we may lose at any given time. Also just like Maman, Meursault is going to die and be executed and his death is going to be quick. This relates to part 1 because Meursault still has guilty feelings about his relationship with Maman and he did not have a good relationship with the priest either because of his behavior.
Throughout the novel The Stranger, Albert Camus shows that Meursault’s behavior towards Maman and the priest have changed in a big way because he went from being emotionless after Maman died, and he became very emotional when the priest walked into this jail cell. This explains that he didn’t have a good relationship with Maman and the priest. For humans, this symbolizes that people that act like Meursault, do not have close relationship with loved ones or people that are being mice and trying to help him. If Meursault had changed his attitude form the beginning, maybe he wouldn’t end up where he is now.

Independent Reading Book Essay
Tony was 7 years old when he got introduced to Star Wars. His parents showed him his first Star Wars movie which was The Empire Strikes Back. Tony enjoyed it so much that he kept watching it over and over again. It was the middle movie of the Star Wars trilogy but he still loved it.
As Tony go older and saw the rest of the movies, it all started to make sense to him. When Tony saw trailers, he got excited and when he was in theaters he could not wait to see them. He loved watching these movies over and over again and he could not wait until they came on tape.
Tony would get beaten up but Star Wars helped him out. He looked to Star Wars for help when he needed it. He would think about parts in the movie that he thought would help him out an it is very fortunate that they did help him out in a big way. Star Wars was always there for him.
When Tony met Marion in college, Tony was a sophomore and she was a senior. They started going out and realized they couldn't be together because Marion was graduating. They had been friends for two years and they learned alot about each other. They shared their passions and they both wanted to make something of themselves as writers. Tony of course talked endlessly about Star Wars. Marion never rolled her eyes when Tony talked about Star Wars.
When Marion left, Tony sent her an email about him making a huge mistake. Marion wrote back saying they will always have their friendship and that short time together. Tony was speechless, heartbroken, and exhausted however, the breakup was for the best.
Finally, Tony says that Star Was has been there for him during those toughest formative years when he really needed it. he says he needed to face the world on his own and that it was time for Star Wars to serves as some other kid's security blanket. "Star Was and I had become like Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. They'll always have Paris. We'll always have the HBO bootleg of Empire."

Plum Plum Pickers Essay
Ryan Gallagher
English CP

In “Plum Plum Pickers”, Raymond Barrio suggests that if people labor hard in poor conditions and work the hardest they can, that it is painful when something is taken away from them. For example, Manuel worked hard for his boss Roberto Morales and Roberto was going to take two cents away from each worker. Then Manuel stood up to Roberto about not taking any money away. Roberto said he won't take it this time and Manuel came through for his fellow workers. Barrio creates this message by showing Manuel being strong for himself and others.
In the first part of this story, Barrio describes what the setting looks like. He writes about how the “apricot trees” are lined up and resemble “the black bars on the jails of hell . . . with no way out” (91). The work of picking apricots continues to pile up. “He picked a mountain of cots automatically”(92). Manuel is being described as a “beast” because of how many apricots he picked. Manuel is sweating heavily because of the heating conditions and he is thirsting for a drink of water. He needed to replenish himself so he poured water on himself to cool his entire body. This shows that Manuel is trying to stay cool and to continue working. This symbolizes Manuel’s strength by working hard in poor conditions and he constantly works hard while trying to stay cool.
In the next chunk through the use of word choice, the author describes Manuel by comparisons. For example, he compares himself to a beast because he endlessly stacked buckets of apricots one after another. Another example is the description of his spirit to a thirsty sponge in water. He is so hot from the heat and he is dehydrated. Also, being tired drained his will and his mind. This shows that Manuel is a hard worker because he stacked a lot of buckets of apricots on a hot day.
In the next chunk through word choice, the author describes Roberto as a "superior man, no one likes him, and he has no morals. “He was a thieving brute and a clever criminal"(92). Roberto was once a worker in the field as well. So, he should know exactly how the workers feel. He made the workers angry for the way he treated them.
In the next chunk through word choice the author show Manuel and Roberto having a conflict. Roberto wants to take 2 cents from every bucket filled and he says sorry to them. Manuel tripped over his bucket of cots and they rolled away in all directions around everyone's feet. Roberto told him to pick them up and then the other workers were about to knock their buckets over as well to side with Manuel in protest of Roberto taking money from them. Roberto told the workers he wouldn't take anything this time, because he was out numbered and didn't want to lose money by losing cots.
In the last chunk through word choice the author describes Manuel's braveness. Manuel never won anything before. He felt a thrill of power by standing up for himself. He had gone up against Roberto and won. Manuel got back the money and got much respect from his fellow workers. Manuel then realized he and others count for something. Men are built to experience a certain sense of honor and pride or else they are dead before they die. Manuel worked hard and for that, he got what he wanted.
In Plum Plum Pickers, Raymond Barrio suggests if people labor hard in poor conditions and work the hardest they can, if someone is going to take something away from others, fight hard for what you believe in, so nothing is taken away. Raymond Barrio shows through Manuel how this becomes possible when he stands up to Roberto and gets what he wants in the end.
In the end after reading Plum Plum Pickers there is one important line from the piece. Men are built to experience a certain sense of honor and pride. Or else they are dead before they die. This line is important because Manuel stuck up for himself and the other workers and he got what he wanted. In the end, the author's purpose through Manuel shows that hard working and sticking up pays off. Also, one big idea of the piece is to have honor and pride. The other big idea of the piece is to believe in what people do.
The narrator Raymond Barrio has an attitude towards his subject. His attitude is that he describes the working conditions as horrible by the words he uses such as being locked and trapped in the rows of trees. They were worked like animals and were treated poorly. the effect of the text shows that conditions were poor and the workers worked hard in the severe heat to pick apricots.
There are objects in the piece that have great meaning such as the apricot tress and how they are lined up, and the bucket of apricots. The effect of the text shows the apricot trees are lined up like jails of hell and the buckets of apricots Manuel kicked over because he was mad about paying.
There is imagery in the piece that the author is trying to convey. They are "maze of trees” (91), “spirit swell like a thirsty sponge in water” (92), and the endlessly unending piling up of bucket upon box upon crate upon rack upon mound upon mountain." The effect of the text is the maze of trees visualizes what the work field looks like. The spirit swell like a thirsty sponge in water shows that he Manuel is exhausted and dehydrated from the heat. Finally, the endlessly piling up of buckets shows how hard Manuel is working and how many apricots he has to pick.
There are figures of speech in the piece that are important. They are "Endless maze of apricot trees just like the blackest bars on the jails of hell"(92). "spirit swells like a thirsty sponge in water"(92), and “worked them like animals and treated them poorly”(92). The effect of the text is the endless maze of apricots is compared to the blackest bars on the jails of hell. A spirit swells is compared to a thirsty sponge in water. Finally, worked them is compared to animals and treating them poorly.

Red Shift by Ted Berrigan
First, Ted is walking in the cold February air down the streets of New York. Ted is drinking and he is smoking. He says the streets look for Allen, Frank, or himself. That Allen is a movie and Frank disappearing in the air. His thoughts are heavy on his mind but, he gets through it.
Then, Ted's thoughts go back twenty years. He is thinking about a woman and saying to himself that twenty years ago he wouldn't believe he would be in the situation he was today. He once had everything but now nothing. He says, "who would have thought that I'd be here, nothing wrapped up, nothing buried, everything love, children, hundreds of them, money, marriage - ethics, a politics of grace." His thoughts continue to anger him.
Now, Ted is remembering 1961 when the woman was nineteen years old and pretty with middle age to come someday. Back then, he couldn't imagine this would have happened. He is angry at the painter who his wife left him for. The painter will forever be in Ted's thoughts which is only human.
Now, Ted at forty three years old, he does not want to dream about the future. He lived a long life with these unhappy thoughts never escaping him. He says, "When will I die? I will never die, I will live to be 110 and I will never go away and you will never escape from me." Ted says these memories will continue to nag and haunt him. He came into his wife's life to change it and did but, his existing feelings will never change.
Now alone and unhappy walking the streets of New York, Ted's fury and anger runs through his body. He says, "Alone and crowded, unhappy fate, nevertheless I slip softly into the air the worlds' furious song "California Dreaming" flows through my costume". His costume is his body.
In conclusion, Ted Burrigan is very emotional. He is angry about a failed relationship he had twenty years ago. His thoughts are very heavy on his mind and he gets through it. The painter will be in his thoughts forever which is only human. His existing feelings will never change. Finally, the world's furious song "California Dreaming" flows through his body.

Landscape with the fall of Icarus
Letter
I, am from Malden Massachusetts. I have always lived in Malden and I only speak english. As a reader, I enjoy science - fiction books. I like to read star wars books. I dislike romance stories. As a writer, I like to write about what books I have already read. I also like persuasive writing because I think its good for me. I dislike writing open responses and essays because I get headaches every time. As a student, I dislike reading however, I do like doing marking up the texts and dialectal journals. As a friend, reading is good because it helps your vocabulary. Writing helps you improve your writting skills. As a thinker, it is good to have ideas. It is also good to have questions, comments, opinions, reactions, etc. You should have asked us to describe us as reactors and how we react. Many of us have different reactions of different things. As a reactor, I react to most books as shocked because I am suprised to find out what happens in them. Sometimes when I, am shocked its about bad things that happen to the protagonist of the story. You should have also asked us to describe us as predictors. All of us predict many outcomes to stories. I like predicting because its a challenge to see if I, am right or wrong. If my prediction to a story is correct, I know I did a good job fully understanding the story. If my prediction was wrong, I know that I need to pay attention to the story a little bit more. Star wars books have all sorts of predictions and I like that about most books. I like how there can be more than one prediction. These are my thoughts to you and what you should have asked us to describe to you. Write soon.
Sincerly,
Yours,
Patrick malone
